In fact it may be helpful for individuals to be seen by a couples therapist because we tend to have a “systems approach” meaning we see your problems and symptoms in the context of your life. Individuals struggling with mental health may also be struggling in the different relationships in their life- be it with themselves, their family, their partner, their coworkers, etc. I work with individuals within the context of their relationships and community. Although we all enter this life alone and leave it the same way, while here, humans are wired to seek and live in community with others.
